Lindsay loves Lachlan

The ALP federal member for Melbourne, Lindsay Tanner, has clearly been taking hints from Australia’s internet political superstar, Lachlan Connor, and is broadcasting snippets of himself waxing lyrical about political topics on YouTube. Great to see that Lachlan’s documentary has alerted some politicians to the existence of the internet tubes, although Lindsay might benefit from a few pointers on shot composition, audio recording and natural presentation. But ten out of ten for effort. Very good. Tick. Gold star.

(Thanks to Fang for the heads-up.)

While I quite like Tanner, I think his video was made by the work experience kid from the Sunshine School of Video and TV Production.

For me, Lachlan’s youtube videos are more real. You get to see a sensitive side to Lachlan that you don’t see with Tanner.

Tanner tries to relate to the people with stories of being bitten by a dog because like an everyday punter, he wears thongs while door knocking. However, this seems a bit forced to say Lachlan’s loss of his cat which pulled a few heart strings and earned more votes than knocking say …3000 doors with thongs on.

Luckily people in the US don’t know as yet that our politicians wear thongs. I’m sure it would get a lot more coverage on TV there.

My money is on Lachlan as his ‘fire-side’ chats are edgier and more genuine.

An elephant stamp goes to Lachlan.

I always liked Lindsay Tanner, would have prefered him instead of K Rudd to sit on the ALP rudder. This from his first speech in the House in 1993:

I am a socialist. I am committed to the values of humanity, tolerance and democracy. In an era when the repressive regimes of eastern Europe have thankfully crumbled, and when socialist certainties are under challenge, I regard it as very much a daunting task to reinvigorate the socialist ideal in this country and across the world. However, there is a great deal within our country that can inspire us. There is a great deal that is worth while about our country, in spite of our many problems — economic and other. I refer to things such as our entrenched democratic tradition; our still defiantly egalitarian spirit; our multicultural society and our extraordinary ability to absorb people of many different races and nationalities without serious violence; our commitment to individual freedom and our entrenched resistance and dislike of authoritarianism, pomp — although recent events might tend to suggest that I am not all that accurate in that comment — and fanaticism. We would do well to recall these very worthwhile achievements of our society when we are next wringing our hands about the latest set of economic statistics, because these are the true, great features of Australian society…

…What we have to do — and it is difficult — is to link those goals with our economic indicators. National economic statistics measure our wealth creation, but they do not measure the damage we cause by creating it and by using it. Corporate decision making indicators — company accounts and the like — do not even properly address the corporate impact of environmental damage, much less the community impact of that damage.

My impression of him is that he’s not really the media type like Turnbull or say Bob Katter. I have to agree with you tho, one has to give him credit for at least having a stab at it, and imho all in all he comes across as a pretty likeable politician, a bit bland maybe but with a friendly nature, at least not as sniping as some others who are rummaging around for a media profile.

[...] Connor has really started something with his innovative YouTube broadcasts. First it was Lindsay Tanner, and now two more aspiring politicians have started broadcasting their messages on the video [...]

I really don’t want politicians to wear thongs. It’s bad enough that we’ve got one in NSW who wears speedos. In public.

Myself, I like a politician who is well groomed and entirely dressed. I don’t want thongs, or any other form of visible panty-line.
