News (very) Limited

I mean, does News Limited not want me to read their stuff? RSS feeds of News Ltd. blogs have always been crap because they didn’t have paragraph breaks and didn’t contain links, meaning that if you wanted to read the post properly you had to click through to the site. But at least you could read it. Yesterday Rupert’s TechNerds flipped the RSS switch to “ridiculous” causing only the first 25 words or so of the post to be included in the feed followed by a frustrating “…”.

I’ve got Andrew Bolt and Tim Dunlop in my RSS reader and I can guarantee that the extra effort and time required to actually read their blogs will now prevent me from doing so. I haven’t even mentioned the slow loading times of News Ltd. web pages because they are so overloaded with advertisements and other crap. No other website has caused my Firefox to crash so often.

It’s a bit ironic that a move surely designed to increase advertising impressions will just as surely drive readers away.

UPDATE (6.00pm): A member of the News Ltd. digital team has been in touch and says the changes “may be temporary.” He reckons he’ll get back to me when he knows what’s going on.
