I’ve previously been called an “orthographic Nazi” (by somebody who couldn’t spell those words without a dictionary) and it’s a label I wear with pride. So I’m out at the pub with some mates last night and I found myself studying the chalkboard menu and writing down all of the words that were spelled wrong.
Here’s a list of errors on the menu at The Retreat Hotel in Brunswick:
* parmigana
* snitzel
* mediteraean
* tomato’s
* potato’s
* bolagnaise
* Mecury
* Hieniken
* jus
(I know the last one is a correct word in French but it has absolutely no place on a pub menu.)

‘Jus’ is spelt correctly, though you’re only likely to find it in the more goormett of pubs.

I thing that consydering the evilushun ov langwitch is a nyce topic two think aboat when eateeng at the pube and getting some bare in your mouth.
Incidentally, I saw a nice one the other day;
Capitalization is the difference between “Helping Jack off a donkey” and “helping jack off a donkey”. ;-)

Actually, has any one noticed that some inner-city pubs (especially in Melb) are getting in a bit fancy?
There are always going to be spelling errors when the pub menu contains a choice of either chicken parma and beer, or duck á l’orange with spatchcock confit, just of truffle, and pinot grigio.

Spot on about the jus, haha. Gourmett;s should never be allowed in pubs, that’s my law. They don’t belong.

I can remember seeing a menu item ‘poulle escallope, garden melange and jus’, i.e. chicken schnitzel, vegies and gravy.

Ed, you know I share your pain in this regard. I find them everywhere, it breaks my heart. The other day I went to the Churchill museum, and there was a typo in the copy accompanying one of the exhibits. Grrr.
