That’s my last latte at the airport Gloria Jeans

Maybe I’m the last guy in Australia to know about this but the Gloria Jeans coffee shop franchise is co-owned by two men with close links to the Pentecostal Hillsong Church. In addition to this, Gloria Jeans is a major corporate sponsor of Mercy Ministries which “is a non-profit organization for young women who face life-controlling issues such as eating disorders, self-harm, drug and alcohol addictions, depression and unplanned pregnancy.” Mercy Ministries is strongly anti-abortion and views “lesbianism as a sin that their residential program assists girls to ‘walk in freedom from.’”

Even though Mercy Ministries (and therefore Gloria Jeans) fights for women’s freedom from freedom*, their possession of a MySpace page means they aren’t interested in fighting for freedom from bad web design.

* Thanks to Bruce for giving us this awesome phrase.

Sorry, but “freedom from freedom” is a sarcastic Jon Pertwee line from ‘The Green Death‘ (where he’s sticking to to the man).

    “sticking it to” rather

I’ll still pay it to you, Bruce.

What is the point of saying that Gloria Jeans is co-owned by two Hillsong members? Many companies are run or owned by Church members…what is achieved by boycotting them?

Should we also avoid those collecting donations for the Salvation Army and other charities because of their Christian links and origins?

My last coffee from Gloria Jeans was my first. I boycott them because it tastes horrible. The same reason I boycott Hudson’s, Starbucks and Doughnut King.

Mrs. Fields is drinkable, and even if it wasn’t the biscuits are more than good enough to make up for it.

Well they bankroll an organisation that leans on governments to produce policies that are of benefit to them. So it’s a fair point to note this I think. But a boycott? Bit strong.

Hey if there are more lesbians doesn’t that mean less abortions?

No. There are many Christian organisations that aren’t inclined to lobby against liberal democracy. We shouldn’t boycott them.

It’s not because Hillsong is Christian, it’s because AoG churches, amongst others as well as parts of more mainstream organisations, are lobbying to overturn democratic rights and gain preference from a state that should by rights be secular (e.g. they call for ID in the science class, but they won’t lobby for the FSM, Thor or the Celestial Teapot).

Ed, you should be ashamed of yourself for choosing to drink their swill anyway. Steve D is on the money, the commercial coffee chains are all different flavours of shite.

It pains me to say it, but having tried to find a palatable espresso when on the road I’ve found that McCafe’s coffe is much less offensive than these other alleged coffee shops.

That said, I’m still petitioning my wife to let me plumb an espresso machine into the car for long trips.

Please don’t think less of me, guys. I specifically noted that it was my last GJ latte at the airport. That’s the only place I drink it.

    Your criticism stings. I’m sulking.

    James,

I support women’s freedom to choose. Gloria Jeans’ owners don’t, and funnel GJ profits to organisations that restrict that freedom. I will no longer give my occasional $3.30 to them. Nothing to do with Christianity.

[...] on from Ed’s Gloria Jeans revelation, fundamentalist nutjobs certainly seem to be thick on the ground at the moment. One called Brita [...]

umm, yeah. Particularly if their ideologies lead to bad policy - like the Salvos and their drug policy recommendations.

Let’s look from the other side. Go into your local GJ’s, you will find most of them are hard working franchise owners making a crust for their families, paying off mortgages just like the rest of us. Yes, their coffee is probably one of the strongest blends on the market, if you don’t like it strong, try half or 3/4 strength. You will find that in a regular, there is actually two shots of coffee, which is alot stronger then other brands.

I love the comments about boycotting the major brands. It sounds like, because it’s a major brand you are avoiding them. But I bet you all have Nescafe in your pantry, hey why don’t we avoid Coles and Woolworths, I am sure there is one someone high up who are associated with Mercy Ministries or Hillsong.

If you don’t like GJ’s coffee or food, that is fine, but don’t boycott them because the original founders of GJ’s in Australia, are members of Hillsong. Again most of the franchisee are hard working Australian’s trying to make a go of life.

I have been to Mercy Ministries - I have seen so many girls hurt and abused there, it really is sickening. Many girls are also kicked out, and leave there far worse off than before they went there for help. To abuse girls who have already been so hurt by life before going there for help is the lowest of the low.

  15.  Gravatar The Editor (Thursday 3 January 2008, 9:24 am) #

Who was abusing those girls, Amanda? You’ve missed the point completely. Shouldn’t they be offered assistance in obtaining a safe abortion if that’s what they want?

  16.  Gravatar Nicole (Tuesday 8 January 2008, 5:44 am) #

I think Amanda’s point is that Mercy Ministries operates off of the grid, and therefore can abuse and harm young women who go there The vast majority of young women attend Mercy because they don’t have any other, better, options. Most already have a serious mental illness. I don’t think her point was about abortions… although Mercy is pro-life I’m fairly certain that the girls and women who go there wouldn’t have had an abortion anyway. It really is a scary organization that needs to be investigated more thoroughly.

  17.  Gravatar Amanda (Saturday 19 January 2008, 2:36 pm) #

Nicole is right, I wasn’t referring to abortions. I was referring to the way young women who go to Mercy Ministries for help are treated while in the “program.” These unqualified, self-proclaimed “professionals” do more harm than good, and it is the vulnerable young women who go to them when they are promised help, who ultimately suffer.

My apologies, Amanda. I misread your comment.

i’m also an ex mercy girl, i was there for 9 months, and i was left in a far more damaged and broken state than before i entered the program. Mercy do not even know the meaning of the wrod “mercy”, and as for unconditional love…. no, condemnation, jundgment and punishment is what they deal out!!!

well you know Naomi, conservative organisations love to use a nice cuddly fluffy name to cover up their evil shite, elitist arch conservatives calling themselves “Liberal” for instance.
Sorry to hear you had a rough time though, I’m sure God is more embarrased by the religious right wing than anyone else.
