 The independent Age

Melbourne’s tabloid-broadband lifestyle supplement Fairfax “newspaper”, The Age, recently added a tagline to its masthead that reads: Australia’s Independent Newspaper

The Age masthead

Fair to say that I nearly choked on my cornflakes when I read that. “Independent from what?” I thought. Certainly not from corporate editorial control; nor from celebrity news. Perhaps what they mean is independence from significant right-wing balance or from any sense of ethical conflict when advertising dictates the selection and composition of stories.

Don’t get me wrong — I think the Herald Sun is much more worthy of lining my cat’s litter tray than The Age but at least the Hun doesn’t arrogantly tout itself as “independent”.

What else is the Age independent from, GrodsReaders?

    Independent from actual journalists. ;-)

Independent from any editorial direction or journalistic expertise at board level to the point where journos are considered “content providers” who fill the spaces between ads.

Couldn’t have said it better myself, boys.

    Planet Earth?

The Herald Sun is a much better size for lining cat trays. The Age is better used as housing materials.

I noticed this a few weeks back and had to search out previous editions of the Age - gawd but I can be slack with my timely recycling - to make sure it had been changed and thought much the same as you Ed.

I have just cancelled my subscription to the Age, citing the following reasons:

    1. the 2 issues are the same because it’s the Christmas break but we will still charge you the same price. I think this was the Friday/Saturday between Christmas and New Year. And they didn’t even include the weekend magazine.

    2. the absence of comics and refusal to offer its readers an explanation.

    3. the piss-poor content of the most recent Epicure.

I’m just glad they don’t run a sandwich shop - “Dear valued customers - due to the summer holidays ( what, you don’t have any? Stiff!) we will be reducing the fillings of all our sandwiches but rest assured, the price will stay the same.”

I like to think that the Hun is read by people who don’t know they’re dumb; and that the Age is read by people who like to think they’re smart. But maybe that’s too elitist?

No, I think you’re pretty spot on there Andy. To that I’d add that The Age is produced by people who like to kid themselves that Melbourne is New York.

I wear my “London, New York, Paris, Brunswick” t-shirt without a hint of irony.

(Whilst sipping a latte, of course.)

Maybe if The Age went back to some decent investigative journalism rather than being obsessed with where to get the best coffee in Melbourne and hired journalists who realised that Melbourne actually runs out further than the tram lines it might have more relavence.
This week Epicure had a story about hip bars in “suburbia” - Yarraville, Northcote, Hawthorn, Windsor, Abbotsford, Richmond, Fitzroy, Collingwood and you fucking guessed it Brunswick.
Either they’re a bunch of elitist fucktards or things are so tight at Fairfax they won’t allow the reporter to claim more than a Zone 1 ticket in travel expenses.
And while I’m standing high in Phar Lap’s saddle, I wouldnt wipe my arse with the Good Weekend or Sunday Life.

clearly the Age is independant of independance, I liked it better when it was the Argus, the coverage of the gold mining licence fiasco and the Eureka “incident” was world class, world class I tells ya.

The Age and Argus were actually separate papers in a time when Melbourne had a quarter of the population but four daily newspapers.
But yes the Eureka expose was excellent journalism as to was the coverage of Bodyline, a term which was actually penned by legendary Argus sports writer Hugh Buggy - so his grand nephew keeps telling me.

another shining example of the age’s ‘journalism’ is that third best blog. reading what’s behind that link actually makes me angry. yes i know it’s just a blog, but still.

thanks Wah, I’ll be sure to do a bit better homework before I make a smart arse remark in the future.
Do you know much about the events of the stockade? it’s a chapter of Australian history that has always fascinated me I’d love to pick your brain.

Krypto I was merely concurring with your gag about the Argus’ coverage of the Eureka Stockade - having read my post again it seems like I know what I’m talking about. Sorry to give that illusion - the the Hugh Buggy bit is true.
I know the basics of the Stockade and the the guy who led it, Peter Lalor, became an anti union thug in a later life.

oh right, I’m reading a biography of Raffaello Carboni who was the only (known) participant to have written an account of the events of the stockade (all the rest of the accounts were written by government and police sources).
Carboni later returned to Italy and was involved in the revolution there also, effectively he was arrested for treason in TWO countries, quite an effort I think.
