I am really mad. That horrible Mr. Rudd let the interest rates go up and, you know, he’s been Prime Minister for TWO WHOLE MONTHS. That’s more than enough to change the economic forecast of the country.
I agree with this piece of well-thought-out-non-claptrap-that-didn’t-make-me-want-to-retch by intellectual and the soon to be knighted MK:
Prior to the election it was all John Howards fault, he lied, you paid, it’s all Howard, interest rates, he promised blah blah. But now that the elections are over and it’s Rudd the Dudd and his touchy-feely moaning treasurer running the joint, it’s suddenly you, you, you, you, you and oh yeah and you also, that needs to pull your weight. Sorry Swanie, if you need us to curb inflation, then so did Howard and hence he’s was not entirely to blame, which makes you a bit loose with the truth now doesn’t it. Anyway come on folks, get to it, your treasurer has kicked you in the teeth, it’s your fault now.
Exactly! It’s easy to change the economic tide in two months. Peter Costello was so good at it, he turned around our economy before he even became treasurer!
Take that Rudd. You’ve lost my vote.

This shit makes me so frustrated - how stupid are these people. The interest rate rise was a result of high inflation of the final quarter of 2007 when Howard was PM. We wil cioiontinue to have high inflation for another year. Rudd is not Merlin the fucking Magician!

The bare fact is that governments don’t have very much at all to do with interest rates, aside from very indirect policy directions liek tax cuts and the like. The reason Howard should cop the blame for interest rate rises was not because he influenced them very directly, which he didn’t, but because he took the credit when interest rates were low(er than they are now - but not lower than most places in the world); he can’t then shirk responsibility for when they rise.
But in the same vein, Rudd et al. should stop forcing responsibility on the previous government, lest they get hammered with the same misplaced blame later on.
I reckon rising inflation is largely our fault; for being greedy during an unsustainable housing boom and trying to upgrade to larger houses for the same price, borrowing to within an inch of our budgets and therefore not allowing for unforeseen events, and sending kids to private schools and buying plasma screen TVs before paying off mortgages. Interest rates go up, yet people don’t heed the reserve bank’s warnings to stop borrowing so much.

A while ago, he asserted that the reason I was so nasty to him was that lefties like me hate the fact that he’s “allowed to speak”. I promptly pointed out that I supported his right to speak, but was disappointed that he wasted that right (for which people elsewhere in the world would die) by talking such shit.
