The Daily Telegraph today broke the story of 43-year-old Jeff Fenech’s ill-advised embarrassing shock boxing comeback, quoting the three-time world champion as saying:

“I’ve got three months to train and I’ll train like never before.”

In a GrodsCorp exclusive, we can reveal that he ain’t joking.

the ubiquitous Fleshlight Ant, do you think the Telegraph picked up on THAT story?

There’s a little known act of parliament which states that all bloated ex boxers must announce at least one shock comeback at least 10 years after they retire.

    BTW, great Photoshopping

    Did he steal those fleshlights?

I don’t know what you’re talking about, Wah.

perhaps he’ll use those Fleshlights to beat up a greengrocer.

Yes Krypto, word on the street is he said “I love youse both” to each fleshlight before beating the shot out the grocer.

perhaps he bought them at a “groin-grocer’s” shop.

    “I love youse both”

    Gold!

This should finally restore the credibility that boxing has been lacking for so many years.

I’m a huge fan of boxing, Dave — it’s far and away my favourite sport.

Every mismatch, comeback, corrupt decision and every instance of exploitative treatment of fighters (young and old) is like a kick in the bollocks for the people who have continued to support the sport in spite of all the promoters’ and pay-TV networks’ outrages and indignities.

Contrary to what many people seem to believe, there still are quite a few of us. But it just gets harder and harder to take seriously a sporting industry that treats the people who support it (particularly the athletes themselves, who work incredibly hard for so little reward) with such contempt.

I’m with you there, Ant. My father and grandfather were both very good boxers in their day, and I watch the boxing with my father sometimes and he gets so disgusted with paper fighters or fights going on too long. I suppose from his point of view his main concern is the safety of the boxers.

He’s been in the ring, so I guess he knows how it feels better than most.

I thought lefties were too soft to like boxing. Vicious sport, that.

I need to drink a few stiff lattes after I’ve watched a bout, Bron.

I’d say something about the word “stiff” in your sentence, Ant, but I won’t. Not witty enough, just plain icky and I think Grod readers have had enough ickiness today, what with Adam’s Kevin Rudd quote and Terry’s visual image of Dr TingTong.

“I’ve got three months to train and I’ll train like never before” as long as all those suits standing behind him aren’t planning to PULL a train on one of those Fleshlights.

My brother in law took part in a bout once, he’s the type to try almost any athletic pursuit. It was simultaneously the worst and best night of sporting entertainment that I have ever witnessed.

  18.  Gravatar Bron (Wednesday 12 March 2008, 5:23 pm) #

Why the best and worst, Dave?

  19.  Gravatar krypto (Wednesday 12 March 2008, 7:02 pm) #

best ‘cos he got beaten up and worst because someone ELSE did the beating?

I’m trying to think if it was George Foreman, maybe Evander Hollyfield who made a title comeback a few years back.
I remember him having a go at Mike Tyson saying “he get’s out of jail and he isn’t ready to fight a forty year old man like me”.
Older boxers can make a formidable comeback, I’d like to see Fenech get up, I always thought he was robbed in that pro fight put on by Don King.
I reckon he’ll find himself in a different weight division than when he last fought though.
My personal favourite is Kostya Tsu.
    He’s awesome.

Actually Krypto, my brother in law and I get on quite well. On the night of the bout he lost on points, but was in the bar drinking with us fifteen minutes later, while his opponent received medical attention for the remainder of the night.

I wrote a lengthy email about it at the time, I’ll have to try and dig it up. It was a bizarre evening.

Have a gander here Krypto, Dave from Albury talks boxing circa 2005.
    Still mostly juvenile nonsense.
