Porkies of mass destruction

And with 16 simple words former foreign minister Alexander Downer finally tells the truth.
THE decision by President George Bush to overthrow the regime of the Iraqi dictator Saddam Hussein, and the decisions of the British and Australian governments to provide military support to the Americans, will always be controversial. It was, nevertheless, the right decision.
If only Downer and the shameful government of which he was an integral part could’ve been upfront with the people who elected them five years ago.
ps/- And before any RWDBs get started: YES I think that Hussein was a murderous bastard who heartily deserved his eventual fate. YES I think that Iraq deserved better than his regime and that if the fledging democracy that is slowly beginning to take shape there blossoms the world will be a better place for it. YES I think coalition troops in Iraq are fighting a noble cause and I wish them the very best. BUT the way that our government, along with the governments of the USA and the UK, went about selling this invasion to their electorates undermines the very democracy we are supposedly trying to spread.

Interesting how Liberal Senator Russell Trood, who was an international affairs expert before entering parliament, condemned Howard’s foreign policy particularly Iraq.

Downer since chastised him but other Libs, including George Brandis, have told Downer to pull his head in (meanwhile the Libs celebrate Nelson’s 10% approval).

No doubt Bolt and those hanging on to the Howard era will find all manner of shit to put on Senator Trooth.

Wah, I remember the gang at the Lowy Institute making a similar statement, along the lines of “the hawks got it wrong and its time they admitted it”. Howard’s electorate retired him before he had the chance to come clean, of course, and Lexy is too busy dating Greg Sheridan to admit to anything.
Ed, it says a lot that you feel you should add a handful of disclaimers to your comment on this issue. It’s another example of the way that discussion of any issue has been in many ways dumbed down by the mindless polarity of the political interwebs.

Who is Lexy, Damian?

Oh, sorry. Alexander Downer.

Ah, of course. I forget he gets called that by some peeps. He’s just Lord Downer to me.

Geez they’re shit scared of the truth aren’t they?
When you stack all the lies from the Howard era end to end it’s quite a pile isn’t it?
The trouble with lies is that you have to keep telling them to cover up the initial one, otherwise you just bite the bullet, own up, wipe the slate clean and move on and hope for the best.
Until you do that of course, you are pretty much doomed to keep repeating the same lie over and over again.

Remember how they said they hadn’t committed troops to any invasion when in fact they had a year before.
Fuckwits.
BTW I supported the invasion because A) I thought there were WMD and B) regime change seemed to be a kewl add on benefit. However C) I didn’t realise they were going to outsource the occupation and D) cock it up for five years until it took a general to point out that you don’t make friends by kicking in doors and beating people in KKK outfits.

Hey, whatever happened to that radio show Downer was going to host? Did it get up?

He did a week with is wife between parliamentary sittings.
He doesn’t really have what it takes to replace Lawsie, oh sure he has the bombast, but he can’t manage the common touch with his Adelaide ‘no convicts here’ accent.

He did the show, I think Neil Mitchell or the 3AW breakfast guys played some of it one morning.
Even on radio you can see his stockings.
If he does FM radio he’ll have to change his name to Downo. He can do a show with Ruddock and Costello - they can call it Downo, Phil and the Smug Cunt

Ant: Did it get up?
I laughed, Ant.
