I read "nursing as standing with light activity" as being Stanton had referred to breastfeeding as standing with light activity... and what a strange mental picture that conjured up.

Now as for nurses performing work that involves 'standing with light activity', I know the job involves a certain amount of heavy lifting when it comes to moving patients, but it's not quite the same as being a bricklayer or marathon runner, is it? I could ask my Mum, who was a nurse, for her opinion, but I'm pretty sure that's a fairly sound assessment.

Considering Bolta's record of demands to set the record straight include the illegal invasion of radio studios, reddened face flecked with spittle as he struggles to get through the door with his T bar pelvis, no I suspect he wouldn't be impressed if that had happened to him.

I would take Rosemary Stanton's word over Bolt, Blair, or any of their slavering sycophants anyday. In 20 + years of writing about nutrition she has yet to be seriously caught out on the science behind her work. That is why her opponents in the food and marketing industry hate her so much, she is right, and they know it.

The person who wrote that comment was trying to imply that Stanton believes nurses do little work.

That's the crux. In context, Stanton is talking about physical exertion, likely in terms of nutrition requirements (a guess, based on what I know of the books she writes). The commenter has scoured Stanton's many works and grabbed a single line which can be used to support pre-determined views.

And the fact that the whole thing has to be unraveled like this shows exactly how nasty Bolt and his commenter are.

It would be nice to see this blog come up with its own news stories. Why do you only select Bolt and Blair please?

Editor, I completely agree that it is taken out of context. But Stanton's denial comes across as though she has no idea what the commenter meant, and that he pulled it completely out of thin air (I'm assuming it's a he). And given the subsequent reference, you couldn't really say that he did.

Fair enough, Norbett. Didn't see that.

Still seems like a quote out of context, though. The person who wrote that comment was trying to imply that Stanton believes nurses do little work. Bolta gave weight to that view with his "kind of" comment.

yeah but then there was another comment after it where someone pointed out that the book was in fact called "food for health" and gave the page reference where she used nursing as an example of "standing with light activity". The details form the comment are as follows:

In Rosemary Stanton’s Food for Health (1st edition, 1979), p 63, table 8 ("Energy Expenditure for Various Activities") immediately in between “Squash” and “Swimming” (it’s alphabetical):
“Standing with light activity (e.g. nurses)”.

So, apart from slightly fucking up the title of her book... maybe not such an open-and-shut case after all? Now, I agree with you that Bolt is a right-wing blowhard not to mention one of the most divisive and bullying writers in the country, one who can dish it but can't take it. But maybe this is a question of interpretation somewhat? Of course, I don't have a copy of the book on hand and am taking for granted that someone wouldn't be brazen enough to just make something like that up.

So...?
