 Onward to victory

GroupThinkFC, which An Onymous Lefty has ingeniously dubbed “The People’s Football Club”, played its second match last night and was annihilated by seven goals.

Now, at the risk of sounding like an apologist — but hey, some of my best friends are apologists — I’d just like to point out that we’re being prevented from playing at full strength by one significant factor: we still haven’t worked out how to play soccer.

Rest assured, though — once we’ve stopped picking up the ball and I’ve developed a better goal-defending strategy than this, the championship is more or less in the bag.

Early days, early days. We held them to two-all at half time. (Take that correctly-used hyphen, Ant! And that second one you hate!)

It was just the second half where we forgot about defence. Next week, we’ll try to remember it.

I’m not entirely sure that eating a spicy Thai takeaway with two beers 90 minutes before the match was a good idea for me. I nearly threw up at the four minute mark.

Well done boys. I’m sure if you persevere, revise your tactics and train really hard, next week you’ll only lose by six.

Last week we only lost by three. We’re going the other way.

    In that case, do nothing.

Except take a salad for The Editor - if he downs a dodgy tom yam kung before the game then the margin mightn’t be the only thing that’s messy.

At least doing nothing is achievable. Maybe we could train by playing a soccer game on the XBox or something.

The problem is, you lefties don’t love competition. I bet the opposition had a couple of aboriginal kids, and you let them have a few goals because of the stolen generation.
Tim Blair would never do that.

    If only I’d brought shorts.

If only there was a “thug” button on the real court.
