Being forced to cancel my holiday by a sprained ankle last week made me so angry that I decided to un-cancel it to teach that ankle a lesson and give myself a reputation for decisiveness and courage. So I drove up to the Grampians (albeit a day late) and hobbled around for a couple of days getting some nature up me and clearing my mind. Bushwalking in mountains is truly good for the soul.

While tramping around I stalked an echidna;

admired the view;

Mt Stapylton

saw some awesome Aboriginal rock art;

Aboriginal rock art

saw some woeful proofreading on government signs;

Government sign

drove past the most craptastic of all of Australia’s “big” things;

Big Koala

and showed that ankle who was boss.

    That’s excellent echidna-stalking, mate. If only all; bloggers were content to limit their stalking activities to wildlife. Aren’t echidnas funny little characters? That one wasn’t bothered by you in the slightest.

    Good on you for getting out and showing your body who’s boss. I’m bruised and battered and aching from our first game of footy for the year, so I reckon I’ll get out for a walk, too. To the Club. Where I will drink beer. And watch the Tiges humiliate the Pies. (As unwise as I know it is to make such predictions on intertubeses.)

    I spent about ten minutes watching him before I pulled out the camera and he seemed pretty cautious for most of that. After a while he just started ignoring me and I crept up really close. Didn’t expect him to walk out onto the path with me though.

    Enjoy yer beers!

    I hope you didn’t fling the echidna at anyone.

    I can’t believe the giant koala is up for sale. Grods.com should buy it as this would be an ideal office for their tilt at world domination.

    I’m just curious about what’s behind the roller door.

    yep the roller door just makes it for me.

    An absolute bargain. Hopefully someone pouches it soon.

    The big koala is a “business”?! Fuck you, capitalism!

    The other words that deserve “”’s are “national” and “icon”. What; the fuck(!?).

    Nice work, Ed.

    Good to hear you’re on the mend.

    If Grodscorp bought the Giant Koala, Ed could spend all his spare time painting it white and black and putting some whiskers on it. Then it would be a fitting Grods HQ. Could also rename it to Napolean’s’ ( I put one both sides, at least one is correct) Retreat or The Giant Feline.

    How cute is it that baby echidnas are called puggles?

    Look they form love trains!

    The giant koala is so sad.

    I too went bushwalking on the weekend, for a half a day in the Blue Mountains. My thighs still hadn’t forgiven me when I pooh-poohed suggestions of rest and walked to Bronte yesterday. Today I can barely move. Ahuh, I totally won that mind-body battle.

    I really want to spend some time in the Blue Mountains. I lived in Sydney for four years and never hauled my arse up there. The only time I’ve been is the dirty weekend with Bec during which I proposed.

    If only you’d known then of the Giant Koala, a much more fitting site for betrothals.

    The Blue Montains are fantastic. I lived there when we first moved to Australia, and I still go up there at least once a year.

    And the best cakes in the known universe are to be had at the Hydro Magestic in Katoomba.

    And one of the best Chinese restaraunts I’ve ever been to as well.

  16.  Gravatar Bron (Tuesday 8 April 2008, 9:32 am) #

    Eat your hearts out, then. I’m going there this weekend, maybe.

    Which Chinese restaurant is that, Keri? In Katoomba itself? There’s one that’s divine in Blackheath.

    And yes, the Hydro Majestic is fantastic - awesome views over the valleys. And I love love love their ballroom and indeed the whole bloody building! Art deco… sigh.

    Next time you’re up there, go to the Avalon restaurant, which was the old Savoy cinema (and more art deco - *swoons*). The food there is to die for. Or was, last time I went. Get a table near the window and watch the changing colours over the valley and in the sky as the sun sets.

    And don’t forget to have high tea at the Carrington Hotel!

    Wow, I should get into marketing.

  17.  Gravatar keri (Tuesday 8 April 2008, 9:39 am) #

    I can’t for the life of me remember the name of the restaraunt, but it does one of the best Szechwan/Sichuan (however you care to spell it) dishes I’ve ever tasted. And I always order the Szechwan. If memory serves (And it rarely does), it’s not far from the turn off for the Three Sisters if you take the streets near the shops. That probably makes no sense, but I know what I’m talking about.

    The Hydro is one of the most beautiful spots on earth, as far as I’m concerned. I used to love going on the Devils Railway first, going to say hi to the glow worms and then ending the day with High Tea there.

    I’ll check out the Avalon for sure, next time I’m up there. If I can get away from the Lapo, where my Cousins are sure to drag me!

  18.  Gravatar Bron (Tuesday 8 April 2008, 9:55 am) #

    Lapo? What’s that?

  19.  Gravatar Ant Rogenous (Tuesday 8 April 2008, 9:58 am) #

    Sounds like slang for something you cop at the local strip joint: “I went in for a quick Lapo but couldn’t resist paying extra for a Hando”.

  20.  Gravatar Bron (Tuesday 8 April 2008, 10:04 am) #

    Only you could derail Keri and I’s discussion of Katoomba/Blue mountains with something like that, Ant.

    But you’re right, it does sound like a local strip joint slang.

    Besides, how would you know, eh, eh, eh?

  21.  Gravatar Ant Rogenous (Tuesday 8 April 2008, 10:10 am) #

    I can’t take the credit for that quote of mine — it was something I heard John Surname say once after a GrodsThink session.

  22.  Gravatar keri (Tuesday 8 April 2008, 10:19 am) #

    The Lapo is the Lapstone Hotel. It’s wedged between Blaxland and Glenbrook down the bottom of the Mountains, towards Penrith.

    Ant, what you and Surname get up to in your own time is your business, but I hope you are at least charging him for those lap dances and hand jobs.

  23.  Gravatar Bron (Tuesday 8 April 2008, 10:21 am) #

    Wow, I love it when a thread takes an unexpected turn in discussion.

  24.  Gravatar Bridgit Gread (Tuesday 8 April 2008, 11:22 am) #

    Forget the ‘lapos’ and ‘handos’ and get yourself a ‘Flesho’.

  25.  Gravatar Ant Rogenous (Tuesday 8 April 2008, 11:36 am) #

    Righto.
