Overheard in a Gmail chat between The Editor and Keri this afternoon.

Keri: Last night [John Surname] was telling me that Monty Python had “little cultural impact”

The Editor: He is totally fucking dropped as my friend

Keri: I nearly had a stroke
Then he went on to tell me that the Simpsons was the finest comedy ever made and had a major cultural impact whilst MP didn’t
And that it was all filler

The Editor: He is retarded in the head

Keri: That’s an insult to retards.

The Editor: I’m so blogging this conversation

Discuss.

What’s to discuss? Surname has no kulcha.

  2. Saturday 3 May 2008, 6:24 pm #Ant Rogenous

Keri has no credibility when it comes to discussing English groups and the level of cultural impact they had.

  3. Saturday 3 May 2008, 7:31 pm #magic bellybutton

So what you’re saying is it is a surprise that Surname is retarded in the head?

  4. Saturday 3 May 2008, 7:32 pm #The Editor

    Good point, MBB.

More comedy, this time from the rabble that calls itself the Liberal Party of Western Australia.

    The West.com.au

Omodei claims Libs ‘nonsense’ forced him to quit

    3rd May 2008, 16:30 WST

A disgusted Paul Omodei has blamed the Liberal Party condoning Troy Buswell’s bad behaviour and factional powerbrokers’ excessive control for his decision to quit the party after he was dumped to an unwinnable position in pre selection.
In an explosive outburst, the former Opposition leader told thewest.com.au today he had enough of the “party’s nonsense” and it would be a sad day for the party if Mr Buswell was given another go at Monday’s leadership spill vote because his successor was an unfit and improper leader.

He said he had no confidence in the party and was left with no alternative but to quit.

Mr Omodei said the standards of behaviour in the Liberal Party had dropped to an “untenable situation” in light of Mr Buswell’s indiscretions.

He said he was disgusted with the way Liberal MPs had defended his behaviour and the fact the crowd at today’s State council meeting had given him a standing ovation.

“The Liberal Party has condoned Troy’s behaviour which is offensive to most of the community and with him as leader it will cause the party significant harm at the election,” he said.

Oh dear, the Libs in WA are disintegrating before our very eyes.

  7. Saturday 3 May 2008, 9:17 pm #THR

In fairness to Nevernude, how much influence would MP have outside the UK? Or, more specifically, the US, in which the ‘UK’ holds the same status as Narnia?

Steve, your links are intelligent and interesting, but my understanding of the comment policy here is that all comments, irrespective of intrinsic value, must contain at least one low-brow pun or sexual innuendo.

  8. Saturday 3 May 2008, 9:21 pm #steve

THR, I thought that the mere mention of the word Liberal incorporated these prerequisites.

  9. Saturday 3 May 2008, 9:22 pm #Bron

    Or just plain old flaming.

    Like this, watch:

Hey Ed, you’re a schmuck! And I’m stealing all your shoes!

    See how easy it is?

  10. Saturday 3 May 2008, 9:24 pm #steve

If Lib and WA is in the same phrase then I can’t imagine anything more lowbrow than that.

  11. Saturday 3 May 2008, 9:27 pm #Bron

I can think of something more lowbrow, but I can’t mention what it is, because I’m sworn to secrecy. Let’s just say it involved second base, a sweater, and fisting.

    Sorry, no more clues.

  12. Saturday 3 May 2008, 9:32 pm #steve

Bron, I believe that Buswell’s wife was onto that earlier when she said,

“I think there’s a lot of other people (in parliament) who should be worried, but it doesn’t come out,” she said. “Troy’s not corrupt. He’s not an adulterer. He hasn’t run off with anyone up there, and that’s all going on (in parliament).”

  13. Saturday 3 May 2008, 9:38 pm #Bron

Well, she would know, wouldn’t she?!

  14. Saturday 3 May 2008, 9:39 pm #magic bellybutton

Bron, you forgot to mention Mr Jack.

  15. Saturday 3 May 2008, 9:39 pm #magic bellybutton

That is to say, when you were talking about the thing you are sworn to secrecy about.

  16. Saturday 3 May 2008, 9:40 pm #steve

Sworn to secrecy until now but now the gloves are off who knows what nasty secrets will be revealed in the next few days.

  17. Saturday 3 May 2008, 9:43 pm #Bron

    Oh. My. Goodness.

MB, I once thought very highly of you.

Now I think even more highly of you!

    When’s the next party?

  18. Saturday 3 May 2008, 9:45 pm #Bron

Sworn to secrecy until now but now the gloves are off who knows what nasty secrets will be revealed in the next few days.

It all depends on what I’m blackmailed with.

  19. Saturday 3 May 2008, 10:16 pm #THR

Somewhere, a bunch of adolescents are abusing each other with: ‘Yo mamma Buswelled herself last week…’

  20. Saturday 3 May 2008, 10:29 pm #John Surname

    Fuck you Keri.

I didn’t say it was all filler - I said that there was filler, and Keri also agreed that in the third and fourth season there was.

Go back and watch the old Monty Python episodes, you’ll be surprised at how many unmemorable sketches there are.

I stand by the argument that not only is The Simpsons a lot funnier than Monty Python, but it’s had a much bigger cultural impact than Monty Python ever did.

Anyone who disagrees should read Planet Simpson (which details the international cultural impact of The Simpsons).

  21. Saturday 3 May 2008, 10:35 pm #Ant Rogenous

As Milhouse once said: “If it’s in a book, it must be true.”

  22. Saturday 3 May 2008, 10:40 pm #John Surname

    Proved my point!

Monty Python is a diversion for comedy nerds (all of whom overstate it’s importance), but The Simpsons has had enormous global impact.

  23. Saturday 3 May 2008, 10:41 pm #magic bellybutton

MB, I once thought very highly of you. Now I think even more highly of you!

    :-)

    Spoken like a true fuck-stain.

    Next party, you’re invited!

  24. Saturday 3 May 2008, 10:48 pm #Wah

Surname is right, there are relatively few brilliant and memorable Monty Python sketches from the myriad produced during their series.
But the fact that the one’s we do remember, after 40 years, are timelessly funny justifies the plaudits.
Monthy Python influenced a whole generation of comedins and you’re merely trying hard to be provocative by saying their impact on culture was not significant, even though this may have wained in recent years.

  25. Saturday 3 May 2008, 11:00 pm #Bron

    Spoken like a true fuck-stain.

    Next party, you’re invited!

    You forgot the “sanctimonious”.

But never mind that, because I’m coming to that party!

  26. Saturday 3 May 2008, 11:01 pm #steve

But really can you imagine the Simpsons dreaming up this one:

“His bitter parting involved taking a swipe at troubled leader Troy Buswell, exposed by The Sunday Times last week for sniffing the chair of a female staffer two years ago.

Mr Buswell also was caught out chasing the same woman around his office, on his hands and knees, pretending to be her ex-husband.”

  27. Saturday 3 May 2008, 11:12 pm #John Surname

Steve - are you Kevin Rudd? Bringing the Libs into everything is getting annoying.

  28. Saturday 3 May 2008, 11:14 pm #steve

They were annoying well before I started on them and are getting more so all the time.

  29. Sunday 4 May 2008, 7:08 am #Jack Dorf

Steve - are you Kevin Rudd?

OMG do the outings never end here?

BTW & BTT Without MP breaking the comedic ground back in the 60’s. I doubt if we would have seen the Simpsons develop at all.

  30. Sunday 4 May 2008, 9:33 am #Chuck A. Spear

I’m with Surname and Wah. For me, the Monty Python movies are more memorable and I find people talk about those instead of the skits.

The Wedge was far superior to Python and The Simpson, however.

  31. Sunday 4 May 2008, 9:49 am #Bridgit Gread

Pound for pound The Simpsons may have produced more memorable scenarios or pithy quotes than Monty Python, but I somehow doubt they’ll have the same longevity. Millions strolled around saying “Cowabunga, dude!” and “Eat my shorts!” in the early 1900s after the first seasons of The Simpsons but nobody of right mind does it now. Yet there’s still a generation of geriatrics sitting in their Smoky Dawson recliners, waving their canes and babbling “He’s not the Messiah, he’s a very naughty boy!” or re-enacting the parrot sketch.

    Outcome: Nevernude loses.

  32. Sunday 4 May 2008, 10:28 am #Mikey

Matt Groening is on record as saying the anarchic MP was comedy fuel for up and coming comedians and comedic writers in the 70’s and 80’s, serving as an inspiration of what could be done and what could be gotten away with.

So Surname - QED right up your arsehole.

  33. Sunday 4 May 2008, 11:11 am #John Surname

Wait thirty years, Bridgit. Get a group of people my age together and it’s a certainty that one of them will say “dig up, stupid!” or “Kids, you tried your best and you failed miserably. The lesson is, never try” before long.

  34. Sunday 4 May 2008, 11:17 am #magic bellybutton

The MP movies were superior, but the series does still bring some memorable moments.

Does anyone even want to remember The Simpsons Movie?

    Also:
Millions strolled around saying “Cowabunga, dude!” and “Eat my shorts!” in the early 1900s after the first seasons of The Simpsons but nobody of right mind does it now.

Which perfectly explains one of the tools I work with.

  35. Sunday 4 May 2008, 11:29 am #Bridgit Gread

Surname, I betcha when our offspring log on to Grods Mk4 in the Year of our Lord 2038, nobody - repeat, nobody - will be saying those things.

  36. Sunday 4 May 2008, 11:46 am #Chuck A. Spear

Everyone will remember the UHT milk quote, however.

  37. Sunday 4 May 2008, 11:48 am #John Surname

Aliens digging through dirt in millenia to come will find the quote engraved in stone, and marvel at the stupidity of Iain Hall.

  38. Sunday 4 May 2008, 12:06 pm #Bridgit Gread

    As evidenced by this.

  39. Sunday 4 May 2008, 12:12 pm #THR

Linguists are already trying to understand the Hall pidgin phenomenon. Chomsky has called it ‘degenerative grammar’.

  40. Sunday 4 May 2008, 12:29 pm #Chuck A. Spear

    Lol;;d, Greado and THR.

    From ‘Fang’:

The email will be used by MIT as a blue print for studies of delusional-moronic-stay-at-home-unemployed-stalking-bloggers. Even Professor Noam Chomksy can’t explain the linguistics behind this email as it totally blows his theory of generative grammar out of the water.

However, Chomsky’s branch of cognitive psychology; genuine insights in linguistics imply concomitant understandings of aspects of mental processing and sub-human nature may help explain Iain’s regressive behavior and writing style. Further, unlike Nim Chimpsky [18], Iain Hall may provide the missing link between animal language acquisition to that of sub-humans.

  41. Sunday 4 May 2008, 1:51 pm #Jack Dorf

    30 years of spam

Yes folks, proving once again that Monty Python does have real kulcharool relevance.

  42. Sunday 4 May 2008, 1:56 pm #John Surname

Remember what I said before about nerds overstating its importance?

  43. Sunday 4 May 2008, 2:12 pm #Bridgit Gread

    Yes, but that is also true about Iain ;;;;

  44. Sunday 4 May 2008, 3:41 pm #krypto

MP’s comic appeal has dated I don’t think there’s much doubt about that. It still attracts new fans but nothing like it did when it was fresh back in the 70’s.
Some comedy just stands the test of time better than others, sad fact of life. Case in point, Fawlty towers or the three stooges for that matter.
I never understood comedy like the young ones and MP gaining fans in generations born long after the show was made.
Black Adder is pretty timeless but most comedy has a use by date and MP is well past it.
I still laugh so hard I nearly shit at the flying circus skit with the butcher who is polite and rude alternately. Fucking gold.

  45. Sunday 4 May 2008, 3:50 pm #keri

I think this should be put to a poll, myself.

And Groening himself was influenced by Python, John.

Where does that leave your claim? If the Simpsons itself was influenced by Python, and the Simpsons has such enormous cultural impact doesn’t that mean that the impact of the Simpsons adds to the impact of MP?

  46. Sunday 4 May 2008, 4:27 pm #krypto

“I think this should be put to a poll” Keri, Keri Keri, when will you ever learn, democracy just doesn’t work.
