 GroupthinkFC: Victory in defeat

The people’s football club, GroupthinkFC, has been a deserving target of ridicule due to its string of poor results that make the Melbourne Demons look like a genuine premiership chance. But last night things began to change.

You see, the person at the sports centre who is in charge of grading made a monumental error when placing us in division three. Despite the awesome presence of our captain first-among-equals, Jeremy Sear, and the daunting confidence of Ant Rogenous and myself, this person at the sports centre graded us well beyond our actual ability. After our fourth humiliating defeat in a row Jeremy approached this person at the sports centre and firmly suggested that we should drop a few divisions — a suggestion that the person at the sports centre took on board after checking our results and breaking into hysterical laughter.

So last night the glorious GroupthinkFC ran onto the field as division twelve’s newest team and brought honour to the people by narrowly losing 5-4. Our five game plan seeks to ensure that by round ten we are consistent winners and that our prowess with the soccer ball has communicated our message of socialism for the people far and wide.

Stay tuned.

Now if only we can get C’s friend who can kick actual goals to play with us again.

Give us a little bit of credit, Cap’. We are getting better.

Very good. It may be a loss on the scoreboard, bit it’s still a victory for actually existing footballism.

    THR: Tee hee.

5-4 that’s positively respectable, well done guys.

I can see you guys are going to be a thorn in the proverbial side of the “keep politics out of sporting contests” brigade for years to come.

Excellent work, just don’t overindulge in the cocaine like Maradona, grog like Georgie Best or end up promoting awareness of “erectile dysfunction” like Pele.

    Hi to everyone at Grods

If you don’t mind, I would like to use this unrelated post to announce the birth on ANZAC day of our beautiful twin girls.

I just thought that Grods should be the first in the blogosphere to hear this good news.

Any suggestions as to the appropriate lefty indoctrination I should now be following to make sure the little ones are participating in group thinking and other socialist-related activities?

Congratulations, Skeptic! I’ve put out a call for advice.

so will you name them Anne and Zac?
Just kidding, congratulations skeptic, that’s great news.

As for the “indoctrination”, hmmm, I doubt that ever works really, I do believe there is a fairly clear link between education, a nurtured intellect and progressive thoughts and ideals.
    I don’t think it’s just co-incidence.

Encourage education as a lifelong excercise and free speech as a right (as my parents DIDN’T) and you’ll probably find you have two little lefties but without all the vitriole that, say, I am famous for.

Thanks Ed, and thanks for the helpful post!

    Krypto

Those 2 names have been suggested by a (non-lefty) friend of mine. Are you sure you’re really a lefty?
    : )

But I could not agree more with your sentiments. I was lucky in that free speech was always encouraged in my family, much to my parent’s continued annoyance whenever I start on one of my anti-religion rants!

skeptic I’d be fairly well apalled if you took my “Anne and Zac” suggestion with anything OTHER than a fairly large grain of salt, “Anne and Zac”?!? C’mon, it sounds like the title of a children’s animated drama series to teach them about “the glory of war”.

I always thought it would be much nicer to see a few monuments honouring women who died in labour rather than the ubiquitous “lest we forget” rubbish, but that’s another issue.

Yeah skeptic, I’m pretty sure I’m a lefty.

    Did you say 12th division?

Jesus wept. I’m amazed you did so well up in third. The other teams in 3rd division that were due to play you guys must be spewing.

  12.  Gravatar Jeremy (Thursday 8 May 2008, 5:21 pm) #

    Congrats skeptic.

Wah - even 12th division isn’t bad; it’s newcomers like us, but it’s hardly blind crippled grannies and orphans.

And Ed - yes, sorry for the instinctively team-deprecating comment. We are indeed getting better.

it’s hardly blind crippled grannies and orphans.

    It’s not?

  14.  Gravatar Bridgit Gread (Thursday 8 May 2008, 6:44 pm) #

Nope, some of the grannies have had their cataracts fixed.

    Who’s the least successsful?
    - Grodsthink FC
    - Oppostiion Leader Brendan Nelson
    - Burmese Department of Civil Defence
    - MK with the chicks
    - Weight Watchers America
    - Fremantle Football Club

    MK with the chicks

Fair go - at least Groupthink has scored four times.

“it’s hardly blind crippled grannies and orphans” nice sensitivity there, somewhere out there in cyber land, somebody who lost their parents, through no fault of their own, just died a little inside.

Let’s hope you don’t line up against them next week huh?

  20.  Gravatar Jeremy (Friday 9 May 2008, 12:19 am) #

I’d only have maligned her if their blind, crippled granny was, contrary to my implication, a champion at indoor soccer. Which I suppose is possible, and I’d hate to be insensitive, so…

I apologise unreservedly to the families of any blind, crippled grannies who are champion indoor soccer players.

you may not have invented evasive postulation Jeremy, but you certainly have raised it to the state of the art.
