Another post, another name dropped

Dolly Downer’s still at the namedropping game. The scene this time is 1997’s APEC summit.
Madeleine Albright didn’t share my view… my only support was the Singaporean Foreign Minister.

Downer’s a classic. Some good place-name-dropping, too. He’s been everywhere, man, and he knows everyone, man. And I love the image of him singing at ASEAN dinners!
Have to say, though, if you read through to the end he actually makes one of the most important points I have heard so far about Rudd’s proposed Asian community. Downer says:
“Countries which have cast off the humiliation of colonialism over the last sixty years won’t be ceding their sovereignty to a supra-national bureaucracy in Bangkok or wherever. As they say, I’ll tell you that for nothing.”
I don’t think I have ever agreed with Downer before, but I reckon that’s on the money.

my only support was the Singaporean Foreign Minister…and a rather fetching pair of royal blue suspenders, a personal gift from ‘Phil the Greek’….

Reading this post, I was thinking the same thing when having lunch at with Ken Livingstone at Dick Cheney’s favourite pizza joint, and swapping our funniest Kofi stories.

do you suppose any of these people drop Xander’s name at every opportunity?
I doubt it somehow.

do you suppose any of these people drop Xander’s name at every opportunity?
Only in the punch line of their jokes.

I loved this line:
“Well, they must have slept through the Sydney APEC Summit (I certainly didn’t.)”
Yeah, because the Sydney APEC Conference did so much to fight climate change!
