RSS spring cleaning

One positive thing (among a sea of negative things) about having no home internet access for an extended period is that it forces you to reassess your subscription to every single RSS feed in your reader. When you open Google Reader after a mere 24 hours offline and see over 200 unread items you know that things have clearly got to change. I’m currently subscribed to 184 feeds and am planning an assault on the list, with about 100 being my ideal level. So I ask you, dear GrodsReaders, what criteria should I use to filter keepers and droppers?

Sex, drugs and rock’n'roll.

As always, Bron, your advice is world class.

Damn, I was also going to suggest similar.

184 feeds! I have 4 and that’s bad enough.
I think clubwah.wordpress.com is a must.

I’m going through the same process, Ed. It’s painful. I even feel a sense of obligation to some bloggers for whom I have long been a loyal reader. You know, you sigh every time you see four or five new unread posts, but feel indebted to them for all the laughs they’ve given you in the past, so you keep the feed there, marking all as read but viewing a couple from time to time and commenting here and there.

I cleared out my reader recently, and only left the blogs that I’d be happy to see new posts from. Some blogs load up and you think “fuck, 20 posts”. Those have to go.

I’m thinking … anything with the name “bellybutton” in the title is a must.

Cut out Grodscorp and Random Brainwave for a start.

I think Surname’s “I’d be happy to see new posts” rule of thumb is a good start. Some of the feeds I have will be ditched by that ruling.
Another issue is the non-blog feeds. I try to keep up with news in areas that I am interested in, but so many of the feeds are general and so you are peppered with a dozen stories about shite before getting to the relevant stuff. I mean, what’s the point? I may as well do a bloody search every day. Or, like, buy the newspaper and skip over the pages that don’t interest me.

Cats (with LOLs, if need be) - yes.
All else - no.

I’m in the process of doing the same thing. I’ve got a ridiculous amount of feeds happening. It’s all I can do to keep it down to 50 unread posts at any one time.

Harrangueman stays in obviously.
