Andrew Bolt, from his liveblog of Sarah Palin’s Republican convention speech last week:
12.35pm: “As the mother of one of those troops [about to serve in Iraq], [McCain] is exactly the kind of man I want as Commander in Chief.” Ding! Fries are done Hit the bell.
Whose bell? The only Americans prepared to be consumed by patriotic zeal upon hearing a platitude like that are bound to be Republican voters anyway.
More importantly, I’m not convinced that reminding the rest of the voting public about their nation’s involvement in a vastly unpopular war, and tying John McCain into the narrative, is such a great idea — no matter how many times Andrew has shot his Bolt declared victory for the US and its allies.

I read Curthoys’ critique you lent me, Ant. And it is excellent. I still disagree with him on the points we discussed, however he makes a great case on the over-zealous arguments of Dawkins and Hitchens that a lot of people recognise and are dismayed by. I have not read Harris’ book, he sounds like a tosser anyway.
Also, there is an awesome poem at the back of Overland. It kinda creeped me out.

I do note that urban dictionary defines the term as

You can see for yourself that the entire segment before his “pig” quip
matches the Toles cartoon exactly.
As pointed out the pig comment may be a figure of speach. Certainly McCain used it in discussing Clinton’s health plan, and was critisised by Democrats as being a sexist. It appears it only became a figure of speach after Obama used it. However the first part of the speel is lifted, without attribution, form the cartoon in the link.

Jim, the urban dictionary also has this: “A term used by many, generally in reference to someone who may be trying to make something or someone look appealing or attractive when it quite clearly will not work, or will only deceive the dumbest of people.” Followed by an example about car salesmen.
As Surname says, it was clearly a reference to the McCain campaign’s attempt to claim they are mavericks when, under the surface, it’s more of the same. Coincidentally, “more of the same” has been a line on multiple Obama campaign ads - including before Palin was even chosen.
The only people getting worked up about this alleged slur on Palin are people who have a vested interest in making it look like Obama meant it as a slur to Palin. The sad thing is that the media goes along with it.

More typical troll action - trolls are unable to argue without turning it personal (accusing others of being hypocrites, of needing medication, of having mother issues etc), before pulling the “poor me” routine when called on the despicable behaviour.
Another good routine is to try and grab the moral high ground by accusing everyone of being hypocrites. In TrollLand, “proving” everyone to be a hypocrite is equal to winning an argument.
