DAMN IT! You're right DD.

That rather takes the wind out of my cutting remark about how I'd want to drop the subject too if no real-world evidence backed my position.

Mondo, I think you mean "Bipartisan". "Partisan" means one-sided. Other than that, let's drop it.

yep. No different to the attitude toward Bush.

No Dave - it is fundamentally different. If you are honestly saying that Bush's ideological opponents hated and feared him following 9/11 then you're attempting to re-write history. That hatred and fear developed in response to the way he handled that crisis - it did not exist immediately following the attacks.

The point I've made is that Bush had partisan support following 9/11. Obama has nothing of the sort, and indeed has never had it. The Democrats rallied behind Bush after 9/11 whereas the Repugs have done nothing but oppose and obstruct Obama from the moment he came to office.

what do you think would have happened if Rush Limbaugh had publicly declared his desire that America fail immediately following 9/11?

by the way, re Rush Limbaugh, I agree that was an incredibly idiotic thing for him to say. I can't stand it when people hope for failure. They should look the word up in the dictionary. It doesn't mean "actually a success."

some fair comments. However the impression was and remains of a groundswell of goodwill toward Obama. Like Bush, he also came at a time of crisis. He was then was given the biggest blank cheque in history. If that's not a mandate to do whatever the fuck you want, nothing is.

they don’t just disagree with him, they hate and fear him

yep. No different to the attitude toward Bush.
Anyone who gets the top job will have mud thrown at them and will have their haters, whether they deserve it or not. Maybe Bush deserved it and Obama doesn't. Too bad - that's the price of power.

I would suggest that Barack Obama has exactly the same opportunity.

I'm sorry DD but this is a categorically false statement.

Obama is certainly widely admired by his supporters, possibly to the point of idiotic reverence, but he is almost pathologically hated by the increasingly unhinged religious and conservative Right. The election campaign run by the Repugs and their pitbull Palin made sure of that - "Obama's not one of us", "Obama hates America", "Obama is a terrorist" - they don't just disagree with him, they hate and fear him (just like they were told to do).

Bush, on the other hand, had the support of almost the entire country following 9/11. His support was not partisan - it was across the ideological board. Look at the voting record from that time - the Democrats constantly joined the Repugs in voting for Bush's desired changes (and compare that to the newar 100% obstructionist record of the GOP since Obama took office).

If you still doubt the fundamental differences between the support for both Presidents then ask yourself this Dave - what do you think would have happened if Rush Limbaugh had publicly declared his desire that America fail immediately following 9/11?

No world leader has ever had, and will ever have again, such a tidal wave of home and international support, he could do, and did, anything he wanted.

I would suggest that Barack Obama has exactly the same opportunity.

Looking back on the Bush years and thinking “Gee, he really did a good job” is a sign of a sociopathic mind.

Please show me where I said or implied that.

I was in the US for a big chunk of 2001, and up until September 11, Bush was regarded by many on the Right, and particularly in the Righty media to be a dunce, pro-illegal immigrants and soft on Islamist terrorism.

Fox News, and pundits like Michelle Malkin, went after Bush hard before the September 11 attacks somehow turned Bush into Hero President.

In the first half of 2001, the online Righties were still pretty excited about what they thought was a great victory in smashing Bill Clinton into utter mockery, they thought they had real power and influence and they were going to make sure Bush did as they demanded. But Bush was not delivering what they wanted in the first half of 2001, they hammered him pretty hard, at least as hard as supposedly Lefty shows like John Stewart's The Daily Show did.

Bush made a string of dimbulb verbal gaffes and took an incredible amount of holidays in those first nine months of 2001, and many of those Bush Is Stupid memes that came into popular circulation when it became clear Bush had lied his country into an unnecessary war and, with Hurricane Katrina, did not know what the fuck he was doing in general were first popular and foundationed into the President Bush II public perception by the hardcore conservative Righties in early 2001 who didn't think Bush was conservative enough.

September 11 gave Bush, as Condoleeza Rice put, "an opportunity", with the vast majority of all people in all nations on his side, to change the world for the better and to turn the aftermath of the attacks into something positive and inspired and brilliant. No world leader has ever had, and will ever have again, such a tidal wave of home and international support, he could do, and did, anything he wanted.

But Bush fucked it up. He blew it. He bailed on Afghanistan, attacked the people of Iraq, who hadn't done one single thing to him or the people of the US, hyped and mythologised a CIA list of mujahadeen the CIA and ISI trained and armed in the 1980s into the global enemy Al Qaeda and is ultimately responsible for the deaths and disablement of tens of thousands of American soldiers and hundreds of thousands of Iraqi civilians.

Looking back on the Bush years and thinking "Gee, he really did a good job" is a sign of a sociopathic mind.

oh go fuck yourself.
I wasn't defending him, but there seemed to be some confusion on that matter, hence my clarification.

To be fair I must admit that I never thought Bush was an arsehole. </i

obviously your view, but someone who authorises torture of defenseless detainees, promotes sperm and cells as constituting some higher life form compared with said detainees, and introduces the Patriot Act to quell NRA ranting that "taking our guns = taking our freedoms", but which instead leaves the guns with the fuckwits but takes away their freedoms pretty much can be classed as an arsehole in my view. oh, and taking birthday cake while katrina wreaked havoc on parts of the US...areshole.

just sayin...

Incompetent, too easily manipulated, and utterly shallow as a human being - but I still reckon he was a friendly and likeable guy. Most boobs are.

I'm not defending Bush.

I'm just saying, he got mocked because (a) lots of people hated him, but also because (b) he was a national leader and national leaders should always be mocked.

No matter how wonderful you are, if you're in power, you're going to be the butt of jokes. Some of those jokes will be unfair, inane, and juvenile.

Well now it's Obama's turn. That's all.

As for whether the audio was edited, I really don't care. It's certainly true that Obama's still enjoying a honeymoon with the media, but that will wear off in time. (note: not commenting on whether that is good or bad, right or wrong).

What amazes me is that a couple of right-wing commentators attempt some satire, mocking the President for admittedly unimportant stuff

Why is it that when the Right is caught out making fuckwits of themselves the knee-jerk defence from their cheerleaders is ALWAYS that the fuckwittery was actually a very clever satire?

So who exactly is Gateway Pundit trying to satirise with this line: "They’re just two ordinary metrosexual guys going out for a burger.”? Who is Hannity satirising with "I hope you enjoyed that fancy burger, Mr. President"?

The standard juvenile Republican smear against Democratic males (they're all effeminate girly men!) is quite evidently not a form of satire. It is little more than simple childish name calling - which is exactly what's happening here.

DD - it's time you considered the alternative explanation for the vacuous idiocy of these Right-wing commentators. That is - they're actually vacuous idiots.

Come on Dave - time to face reality.

If Daddy Dave peddled any more bullshit, I could fertilise my garden with his comments.

What amazes me is that a couple of right-wing commentators attempt some satire, mocking the President for admittedly unimportant stuff, and suddenly a there’s a tidal wave of outrage.

So where's this "tidal wave", Dave? On this thread I can see only one comment that expresses anything close to outrage, and that's from Wah --- who, if you're familiar with his own blog or his regular contributions at Grods, is in character. The rest of the comments here are flat-out mockery of people and woeful "attempts at satire" that richly deserve to be mocked.

This line takes the chocolates, though:

But, wars and social policy notwithstanding, he got mocked for some very fucking trivial things.

He got mocked because a) he was an imbecile and b) he was an arsehole ... which naturally makes people more inclined to notice and expound on a).

And what made him an arsehole? Among many other things, the "wars and social policy" you've glossed over, presumably to allow you to continue to indulge your fantasy that the mockery and contempt he attracted came out of nowhere --- or worse, was whipped up by a vast "liberal media" conspiracy.

Damn. I wish hotdog stalls would have dijon mustard like they used to in the 90s. I use dijon mustard in a nice egg mayonase that I thicken out with crushed pine nuts and cashews.

I usually have dijon mustard and dijonaise in a squirt bottle in the fridge as well.

They are just up above and to the left of Holt's pickled head.

daddy dave, I think you forget (or you're deliberately lying, one or the other). Bush had a very high approval rating (think it might have been a record high) and world-wide sympathy, especially in the aftermath of 9/11.

He took every bit of that goodwill, towards himself and towards America, and flushed it down the toilet over the next eight years. You can't rewrite this bit of history (yet) as we were all there, buddy. We all saw what happened.

In fact there was very little mocking of Bush in the first year or two of his Presidency. Sure that changed and folks really went after him towards the end because people felt short-changed, ripped off, let down and lied to (as they had been). They also felt Bush had wrecked America's standing in the world and wrecked the economy while enriching himself and his buddies, because he had. He should be in jail, as should Cheney, Rove and half a dozen others.

Compare that to what has happened to Obama and to Rudd's Labor in Australia. The rightoffs have been after them like a pack of seagulls after the last chip from the MINUTE they took office; and they will continue, at full screech, until they succeed in getting rid of them, one way or another. Exactly the same thing happened to Bill Clinton.

The rightoffs keep saying Lefties don't have a sense of humour. I think they usually do, and usually it's a lot better than the Righty sense of humour (remember high school; remember the maths dweeb's lame attempts at humour? That's Rightoff humour for ya). However I think a lot of Leftys HAVE lost their sense of humour when it comes to the Right. After thirty-odd years of Fraser and Howard, the Dismissal, Howard again, the Smirk, Maggie bloody Thatcher, Ronnie Raygun, upper class privilege, trickle down, monetarism and all the rest, Bush was just about the last straw.

A lot of people, not only committed Leftys, have just about had the Right up to here. I know I have.

Ah, thanks for the link to that blog daddy dave, that's gone in the favourites. As one of the commenters there says, I don't think I've ever seen anybody go bug-fuck crazy on a blog before.

Rowdy the Wiccan over at CBS would be a candidate but I think she was bug-fuck crazy before she got there.

It amazes me that people like Daddy Dave actually buy into this transparent nonsense. Their unbelievably partisan and shallow approach to politics is actually depressing.

right back at ya, Mondo. What amazes me is that a couple of right-wing commentators attempt some satire, mocking the President for admittedly unimportant stuff, and suddenly a there's a tidal wave of outrage. I mean, really. Bush was fair game (and like anyone in power, he was fair game). But, wars and social policy notwithstanding, he got mocked for some very fucking trivial things.

Anyway, I'm just reporting to you the conservative take on the whole thing. I haven't paid that much attention to it. It does appear to have legs, but then, lots of stupid ideas appear to have legs at first glance. So who knows.

Remember in 2004 leftist, French speaker John Kerry was abused for having a Philly cheese steak sandwich with Swiss cheese instead of Cheez Whip.

And yet the same morons who made an issue out of this had no problem at all supporting a man-boy, born into phenomenal wealth, who rode family hand-outs and special favours from one priviliged position to another, as their preferred President.

But yeah - Obama and Kerry are elitists who are out of touch with the common man.

To steal a question from Andrew Bolt; when did Teh Left criticise George W Bush's choice of condiment?

Obama's doing pretty good if his penchant to use the telprompter and his choice if mustard is the best they can do.

I hate these people.

since you seem to get your news filtered through the prism of left-wing talk, let me spell it out for you... the problem was never that Obama ordered Dijon mustard. The problem was that the news media edited out his request for Dijon mustard from the audio.
Apparently, it was supposed to be a PR stunt showing the president as down-to-earth, eating hamburgers and fries with his buddy, and he had to go and do something prissy like order Dijon mustard. Panicked journalists decided to protect him from his own lack of down-to-earthedness.

the blogger who started it all, talking about the whole Dijongate thing (danger, right wing blog) here"

I have Chutney on my burgers sometime. Does that mean I'm a communist?

If this food-partisanism is true, then cashiers should be able to deduce their political stand points and thusly either offer them a 'green bag' or not.
