Prodos denied

It is with regret that GrodsCorp must inform its readers of Prodos‘ loss of the preselection race for the Liberal candidacy in Richmond. This despite a stirring speech to the good men and women of the Richmond Liberal party. Some highlights:

My name is Prodos Stefanos Nicholaou Marinakis. I am an Australian with a Greek name. My parents came from Greece in 1957 and made Australia their home. And I’m so glad they did.

Aussies are supposed to be shy about being patriotic. I’m not. No way!

Wanna test me? Come on, dare me. I dare you to dare me. Okay, you got it. You asked for it. Here it is.

[Do kookaburra call.]

I just love, love, love being an Aussie In the Sun
I live and breathe in Richmond
It’s time to have some fun
It’s time to get the job done!

And the job is to win Richmond for the Liberals!
Win Victoria for the Liberals!
Make Ted Bailleau the next Premier of Victoria.

Richmond is winnable.
That’s how I see it.
That’s the only way I see it. I believe in winning.

[...]

Over the last 20 years I’ve worked as a performer and as an activist, promoting classical liberal principles. Who’s funded all these projects that I run? It ain’t taxpayer’s money buddy. It’s individuals, private donations.

Plundering the taxpayer to fund every smartarse arts and cultural project is completely unethical. It’s repugnant. And it needs to stop!

Who believes and fights every day for classical liberal principles? Prodos! Individual rights and common law? Prodos! Who’s fighting for free speech and the repeal of the so-called “Racial and Religious Tolerance Act”? Prodos! Vote for free markets and free thinking.

Vote for the man who’ll campaign like a hurricane from now until the election.

And beyond! Day and night. Seven Days a week.

Vote for the man who has a proven record in the Richmond South branch as an effective team player and has earned the respect and total support of Richmond South.

Prodos Stefanos Nichaolaou Marinakis.

At Your Service.

Presumably the bit in italics is a song. And did he claim that taxpayers have never funded his projects? This is Prodos on a chat site:

I’ve been on the dole myself a few times. I kept pretty busy during those times.

But anyway, let’s all wish Prodos better luck next time.

Who would have thought the Richmond Libs would be so short-sighted? I’m shocked. He promised to campaign like a hurricane for crying out loud….

Shattered. The State Election will be so dull that it could do with a few gimmick candidates to liven things up.

FYI that speech wasn’t to the people of Richmond, it was to the Admin committee of the Vic Liberal Party. The preselection was overseen by the central committee rather than local branches because of the lack of Liberal party members in Richmond.

Either way, James - they obviously have no sense of adventure.

I can’t wait until after the election, when Prodos will be able to witness far and wide and LOUD about what might have been….

The most stirring line for me was:

    [do kookaburra call]

How could they not have responded to that?

From ‘Walk for Capitalism’ to ‘Walk for the Liberal Party’?

If I were a member of the Richmond South branch of the Party — and by the sounds of things, they ARE desperate — I’d vote for Prodos!

I’d vote for the freak too, @ndy. It would be a rock-solid, iron-clad guarantee of four of the most entertaining years of State politics in Oz history.
