Did anybody else catch Brendan Nelson’s utterly embarrassing performance on 7.30 last night? It was inspiring viewing. My absolute favourite bit:
KERRY O’BRIEN: Did you apologise to your party room?
BRENDAN NELSON: Well I’m not going to discuss what happens in our party room Kerry. I am not going to discuss what is said by me or by anybody else. As far as those issues are concerned I will leave it to you to discuss with commentators and a variety of other people.
KERRY O’BRIEN: [Question]
BRENDAN NELSON: Well what I have made clear to my party room and my colleagues, Kerry…
KERRY O’BRIEN: Sorry but Dr Nelson, you’re just telling me now what you told the party room today but you just said a moment ago you were not going to say what you said in the party room. You are going to tell us what you want us to know in the party room but not what you don’t want us to know.
P to the W to the N to the E to the D.
And in close second place was this bit:
KERRY O’BRIEN: Dr Nelson, isn’t it true that you are still not yet committed, definitely, categorically, to a 2012 start-up? Isn’t that right?
BRENDAN NELSON: Kerry what we are, look Kerry…
KERRY O’BRIEN: Isn’t that right?
BRENDAN NELSON: Kerry what we are committed to is an emissions trading scheme as one of three pillars of acting in relation to climate change. We need to make sure it’s done responsible and methodically, informed by the Copenhagen…
KERRY O’BRIEN: No. no, you’ve already said these things.
BRENDAN NELSON: No just listen…
KERRY O’BRIEN: You’ve said them…
BRENDAN NELSON: Kerry, just listen if you want the answer. Informed by the Copenhagen meeting we believe it can’t responsibly start any earlier than 2011 and probably in 2012.
But the most important thing is to get it right and to make sure that the price of carbon and the impact on Australian families is reflected by the actions taken by the rest of the world.
KERRY O’BRIEN: No you have said all of those things. The point I’m making to you is…
BRENDAN NELSON: Well good…
KERRY O’BRIEN: It is open ended Still, isn’t it, when you would commit finally to introducing a scheme. You might not introduce it before 2013 or later. You say probably 2012.
BRENDAN NELSON: Well Kerry, look, I’ll say it again. You’re obviously having trouble getting through.
KERRY O’BRIEN: No not at all.
How can one man pack so much incompetence into so few sentences? And the “well good” response is surely up there with “power of persuasion”, “just watch” and “Rohan Fitzgerald”.
Check out the transcript or the video and tell us your favourite bit.
UPDATE: Bolta reckons Kerry O’Brien performed worse than Nelson. He wants your opinion so go tell him.
